The Distinguished Lecture Series was honored to wrap up its 2014-2015 year with a conference led by the knowledgable and engaging Pierre Mirel, the Director of the European Commission’s DG Enlargement Unit for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo Issues. Mr. Mirel led students in a discussion on the topic “Enlargement and Neighborhood: EU Policies to the Test.” He explained the legal and political relationships the EU currently has with its neighboring countries, from Ukraine to Morocco, and he detailed the practical steps required to become an EU member-state. Mr. Mirel frankly answered students’ questions, including inquiries about how realistic it is to expect applicant countries to become member states in the coming years. He expressed great optimism about the future of a united Europe. The fantastic speaker and engaged audience ensured that the DLS’s last event of the school year was a great success, and we are grateful to all who attended.
