Moral Economy of Gratitude and Coming “Home” from Exile – The Case of the Free French

Guillaume Piketty

On Wednesday November 5, we had the pleasure to welcome Dr. Guillaume Piketty, historian and specialist of the French resistance, to our campus. He introduced us to one of his most recent books, Les Compagnons de l’Aube (2014), a considerable work and the realization of a dream. He unveiled the secrets, particularities and additional details of the French resistance, explaining the context of the apparition of national recognition medals (The Cross of Liberation), the mechanisms concerning the difficult return of the soldiers to “civilian life” (reappearing of prejudice, punishment and search for forgiveness feelings) and constitution of the Order of the Compagnions of the Liberation. We learned about the tragic and heroic stories of few young men (among which Leon Bouvier and Jean Maridor), part of this order. Dr. Piketty introuced us as well to the book Carnet de retour avec la division Leclerc, Pierre Bourdan, which he considers as a “real jewel”.
